NC State Prevention Services provides case management, education, and outreach emphasizing developmental, and non-judgmental perspectives for student prevention efforts. Through the lenses of behavioral health, wellness, and sustainability, our professionals collaborate with the campus community to enhance individual and collective well-being as well as assist students to gain the necessary resources to remain successful academically and emotionally at NC State.
Student Behavioral Case Management (http://studentsofconcern.ncsu.edu) at NC State (also known as NC State CARES), as part of the Department of Prevention Services, works collaboratively with campus resources to provide support for students who are in crisis or who are identified as exhibiting concerning, worrisome, or threatening behaviors. Behavioral concerns addressed by the program range considerably but tend to focus around issues related to self-harm, emotional regulation and behavioral outbursts, relationship dynamics, substance abuse, and anxiety related to social connections and academics. The program places a strong emphasis on individualized assessment, resilience, self-advocacy, and collaboration. Case Managers are responsible for identifying and mitigating the risks to personal safety and academic success related to these concerns. The Case Manager will report directly to the Director of Prevention Services and will serve within the Department of Prevention Services.
Essential Job Duties
The CARES Coordinator is responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Engage in behaviorally and clinically informed, one-on-one assessments with students to identify and mitigate barriers to personal and academic success, including threat assessment toward self and others.
- Provide timely and appropriate referrals to support services within the university and coordinate intervention plans through the use of and collaboration with various university and off-campus resources in order to minimize or resolve student concerns.
- Monitor and track individual cases and student progress to ensure compliance with recommendations, and ongoing assessment and address new or emerging concerns as they arise, including safety planning.
- Collaborate as part of the University’s NCSU Cares team, a cross-campus support team designed to provide assessment and practical support for students of concern; when appropriate, provide assistance to the University’s Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT), a cross-campus team designed to assess and mitigate potential threats to the campus community; serve as part of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).
- Participate in providing comprehensive outreach and consultation services to faculty, staff, students and families through the use of traditional in-person presentations and other creative multi-media efforts; collaborate with other campus offices to ensure coherent integration of messaging and education of the campus community.
- Complete training in QPR (Question, Persuade, & Refer Suicide Prevention), and other Prevention training programs and offer programs for students, faculty and staff.
- Assist in managing a database (Maxient) related to student concerns by making sure all correspondence, notes, and action items are accurately documented.
- Assist in the appropriate and ethical assessment of data collected by and about students of concern in an effort to develop and maintain best practices.
- Create and manage re-entry strategies for those students returning to school after a psychological hospitalization.
- Participate in Postvention contacts and support

Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s degree required
Other Required Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication in a variety of settings
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems and use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decisions autonomously
- Demonstrated experience in providing individualized support for students in distress or who have been identified as exhibiting concerning or worrisome behaviors
- Ability to establish collaborative relationships with campus and community partners
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team-oriented environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with risk assessment
- Demonstrated knowledge of case management systems (preferably in a higher education setting), and/or experience working as part of a case management support team
- Demonstrated history of effective collaborations across a complex array of multiple agencies within a university setting
- Excellent skills and experience in working with underrepresented student populations
- Strong working knowledge of various federal and state laws affecting issues of privacy and confidentiality, disability accommodations and support, and response to sexual violence
- Experience with supervision and training
- Broad knowledge of best practices and current national trends related to higher education case management
- Licensed social workers are strongly encouraged to apply
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Fully licensed as a mental health professional in NC or able to obtain this license in NC within 6 months
- Licensed to practice independently as a mental health professional
